About the game

Guess if the flag shown is a real-world flag or a fake knock-off/invented flag by pressing the buttons under it. A new set of 7 flags is released daily at midnight (UTC).

What is a real flag?

A flag is considered "real" if there's widespread recorded use of it. In this category we include:

• National flags (e.g. the flag of Germany)
• Naval, civil and state ensigns
• Historical flags (e.g. previous versions of the Lebanese flag)
• Official state/subdivision flags (e.g. the Texas state flag)
• City flags (e.g. the flag of Amsterdam)
• Indigenous peoples (e.g. the Sámi flag)
• Certain organisations (e.g. the EU, OPEC, Nordic Council)
• More... (e.g. offices, pride flags, political parties, movements, etc.)

At a certain point, the "realness" of a flag becomes blurry. Decisions are at my discretion, but feel free to contact me about any unfair classifications that you may encounter.

What is a fake flag?

Fake flags come from many different sources. Some are made by me, some are found online, and some are generated by software. These may include:

• Mashups of two or more flags
• Redesigns of existing flags
• Completely new flags for a region, world building, a game or a concept
• Fictional flags used in media
• Existing flags with elements changed
• More

Man-made flags are mostly linked from Reddit, mainly from r/vexillology. These flags are hand-picked by me, so they can contain mistakes.

What flags are left out?

Flag proposals from referendums that were never accepted as an official flag are generally kept out of the game, or can occasionally be found under the category of "fake flags". Similarly, we try to leave out most micronations and most pride flags due to their abundance and quick fall-off in usage, except for certain well-established examples.

How are flags picked each day?

Every day, 7 flags are picked from pre-approved real and fake flags. We aim for a fair mix of real and fake flags, but it can skew from day to day, and we mix flags from the categories above (countries, states, cities, groups, naval, historical, etc.) for a fun mix of different flags. Generally the flags start easier and end with more difficult ones, but it's sometimes switched up! Flags used for a day generally don't appear again for a long time (around a year).

Sources and credit

Most flag images are sourced from Wikipedia and Reddit. Each flag has a link to its source and credit to its author on its explanation page (seen after a guess).
